Alicante is a major port in the Valencia region of Spain and the central city of what is known as the Costa Blanca (White Coast). Like many of the ports along the Spanish Mediterranean coast, it was first settled by Phoenicians, then Carthaginians, and finally Romans - all of whom wanted to trade with local tribes for metals, especially silver. When the Moors captured much of the Iberian peninsula, there began a golden age for the area and the castle of Santa Barbara was first constructed by the Muslims to protect the city. When the Christians emerged victors in the long struggle with the Muslims, the city began to evolve and the old parts of the city took on the character that we see today. On top of Mount Benacantil, a steep hill to the north of the harbor, sits the massive Santa Barbara Castle, the city's iconic sight and one of the largest of all Spain's castles. In the shadow of the castle is the old town which features churches and other historic buildings and some museums. Along the harbor is the lively Explanada de Espana, a meeting place for locals and tourists alike. The city beach at El Postiguet is a long stretch of sand with lots of facilities.

In the suburbs of Alicante is Elche, a lovely town with an excellent Botanical Garden. North of the city is Canalobre Cave which offers tours of the extensive chambers. Not far off the coast is the island of Tabarca, offering nice beaches and scuba diving in lovely clear waters. The resort town of Benidorm is a hugely popular urban beach area with a wide variety of activities including amusement parks and lively clubs. West of Benidorm is the hilltop castle of Guadalest, originally built by the Moors and now surrounded by a lovely tourist town that offers a wide variety of unique museums. The coastal town Altea offers a taste of old Costa Blanca.
