Built near the archaeological sites of the Palmavera Nuraghe and the necropolis at Anghelu Ruju, the small port at Alghero was a stronghold of Catalan-Aragon crown during the 14th through 17th centuries and still shows marked Catalan influence. A good portion of the population still speaks a variation of the Catalan language. The city's old town is a small fortified area just south of the port and marina with narrow streets and bastions built to protect it from invaders and towers to watch for approaching ships. For the most part the port was built during the Genoese, Catalan and Savoy eras. There are several important churches within the historic center including the Cathedral. Mostly north and west of the city are many fine beaches and a wonderful park that surrounds the Bay of Porto Conte. Capo Caccia is one of Sardinia's most popular sights and offers some great caving, including Neptune's Cave which can be entered by land or by water in scuba gear. There are lots of great spots for scuba or snorkeling and the park offers hiking trails and rock climbing as well.
