Amalfi is a small city on the southern slope of the Sorrento peninsula, which was once the capital of a thriving merchant duchy that rivaled Genoa and Pisa. The city gives its name to the area commonly known as the Amalfi Coast, and to the road that you follow to reach this stunning town. The Amalfi Road follows the slopes and cliffs of the shoreline and offers breathtaking views and frightening curves. Several guidebooks recommend against renting a car to drive the road as the local traffic is not tolerant of drivers unfamiliar with the terrain. Amalfi, and much of the surrounding area, was adopted by wealthy British visitors as a place to spend their summers between the World Wars and today it remains a magnet for wealthy seasonal visitors from many parts of Europe. The town itself is built in a narrow and dramatic ravine. The streets climb the slopes of the ravine on both sides. The 11th century cathedral is the most popular attraction in town. The most famous local products are limoncello and artisanal paper.

Geography and Population

On the southern side of the Sorrento peninsula which forms the southern boundary of the Bay of Naples, Amalfi is situated in a deep ravine surrounded by steep cliffs. The coastal area around Amalfi is known as the Amalfi Coast and has been a summer resort area for wealthy Europeans for over a century. The city itself is small with a population of just over 5,000 (down from 70,000 around the time of the 1000 AD).

How far?

Taxis in Italy are expensive so you are often better off booking excursions with your cruise line or pre-arranging tours with tour companies.  If you like to live as the locals do, then the local bus service is convenient and inexpensive.  It is not recommended that you rent a car!  The Amalfi road is incredibly scenic but also scary.  It would be a shame to miss it focusing on the traffic.
