Ancona was mostly destroyed during World War II because of its importance as an Adriatic naval port. There are a few significant historic structures on the hill adjacent to the port which are worth visiting, including the Cathedral and the Arch of Trajan. Just to the south of the port is the large park that surrounds Monte Conero and includes a coastline and beach area known as the Riviera del Conero and the small resort towns of Portonovo and Sirolo. The most important historical and cultural attraction in the region is the inland town of Urbino, named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Medieval and Renaissance hilltop center. The tiny country of San Marino is completely surrounded by Italy and provides lovely views of the area, along with unique coins and stamps. Just to the north of the Marche region is the coastal city of Rimini, known for its lovely beaches and some significant Roman ruins which include the Tiberius Bridge and the Arch of Augustus. Inland from Ancona is the walled Umbrian city of Perugia, well-known for its historic churches and fountains and its important place in Renaissance art and architecture.
