Odysseus (Ulysses) of the famous Odyssey was the king of Cephalonia, whose home on the nearby island of Ithaca can be seen from the port of Sami. This ancient island is the largest of the Ionian group on the western side of Greece. In 1953 both Cephalonia and the island of Zakynthos to the south were hit by massive earthquakes, destroying most of the homes and buildings on the islands. It is estimated that 100,000 people moved away and there is still only a small portion of the pre-disaster population there. What makes this island so appealing is its unique and rugged geography, which includes caves, subterranean waterways, and rugged cliff- covered coast lines. Argostoli, the capital and largest city, is in a bay within a bay. You can take a ferry to the island's second largest city of Lixouri. Two-thirds of the islanders live in these two cities. Without doubt, the most popular tour on the island is the combination of the Drogarati Cave and underground Melissani Lake, both not far from the small fishing village of Sami. The most popular historic attraction is the St. George Castle. To see what the island used to look like, you can visit the one place not destroyed by the earthquake, the fishing village of Fiskardo at the northern end of the island. The towns of Assos, on a narrow isthmus, and Sami, on a large bay facing nearby Ithaca, also have some rustic charm along with tavernas at lovely boat-filled marinas. On the road to Assos is the island's most renowned beach, Myrtos, a half-circle of white pebbles at the bottom of a dramatic cliff.

Tourism has increased over the last 20 years since the release of the movie (based on the novel of the same name), Captain Corelli's Mandolin, which was filmed on the island.

Geography and Population

Cephalonia is a large island, but fortunately Argostoli is centrally located, so you can get anywhere on the island within an hour drive (Fiskardo in the far north takes an hour). It also has the highest mountain in the Ionian chain, Mount Ainos, which is over 1600 meters. Rugged and sparsely populated since the 1953 earthquake, the island has roughly 36,000 people, with about 12,000 each living in Argostoli and Lixouri.
