Ever since the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, Barcelona has been open and ready for tourists. Ask those who have been there. Barcelona is wonderful in all the ways you want a tourist destination to be wonderful. The food is magical, the drink is abundant, the shopping is varied and less expensive than other European tourist meccas, the people are exuberant and friendly, the art and architecture are world-class, and the culture is proud and welcoming. Of all the large cities I have visited, Barcelona ties with Paris for its energy and beauty. The most famous site in Barcelona is La Sagrada Familia, a shrine originally designed by Barcelona's favorite son, Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926), whose forward-looking design has set the tone for the city and for its artistic culture. As envisioned by Gaudi, the basilica combines ornate gothic shapes with art nouveau embellishments. The religious memorial is dedicated to the "sacred family of Christ." The other most famous Gaudi work is the hill-side park and buildings of Parc Guell just north of the central city. Barcelona's gothic Cathedral should not be overlooked. The large hill southwest of the city center was the site of many Olympic events, but has long been the site of museums, gardens and parks. La Rambla is the most famous shopping and tourist avenue in the city and is within easy walking distance of the World Trade Center Terminals (see below). Street performers and the wonderful produce market are exciting features of this avenue. To see the best of Barcelona's architecture, Passeig de Gracia is an excellent choice with some of the most expensive offices, apartments and shops in the city. One rather striking feature of Barcelona culture is the focus on sports and the Football (soccer) Stadium tour is popular among sports fans. The urban beach at La Barceloneta has been rated among the world's best.

If you ask the nationality of Barcelona locals they will certainly tell you Catalan and the local language is at least as common as Spanish. Not far away are the lovely seaport of Sitges, the vineyards that produce Spain's cava (sparkling wine), and the mystical mountains, grotto and monastery at Montserrat.
