Recommended Purchases: The most famous product from Turkey is their woven floor coverings, both carpets and kilims. What's the difference? A carpet has pile because it is made with short threads that create a plush surface and a one-sided rug. A kilim is woven with longer threads that create a flat surface and generally a reversible rug. Kilims are naturally less expensive and generally not as durable. The highest quality Turkish carpets and kilims are made with silk, while a less expensive option is wool. Buying one of these in Turkey is a wonderful adventure and worthwhile, as long as you do some research in advance. (There are number of fine articles if you search "Buying Turkish Carpets" on the internet.) You can get a low pressure introduction by visiting a carpet cooperative, a place where villages and weavers work together to promote their products.

Other textiles, including clothing and upholstery, are also popular and inexpensive in Turkey, especially at the bazaars and markets. Items with basic designs may suit your needs and tastes, but some, like ties, may be out of fashion by American standards. Turkey is the largest producer of leather in the world and has great prices as long as you haggle. Other common purchase items are colorful lamps, ceramics from various regions of the country, and locally crafted jewelry. Turkish delight, Turkish coffee, spices and teas are the most popular food purchases.
