Situated on the Turkish Riviera, Bodrum was an important and wealthy trading city in ancient times and was the location of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, which has given its name and basic design to all other mausoleums. Built for King Mausolus of Caria during the mid-4th century BCE, it stood here for nearly 1700 years until it was destroyed by an earthquake. The Knights of St. John used the stones from the Mausoleum to build Bodrum Castle, one of the best remaining Crusader castles to be found in the Mediterranean. The castle now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, rated one of the finest museums in Europe. Also within the city are several other architectural wonders, such as the Ancient Theater, which is said to have been begun during Mausolus' reign and completed by the Greeks. The outdoor venue holds up to 13,000 people and still hosts concerts. The main reason that tourists come to Bodrum is for active pursuits and to be a part of the social scene. If you want to discover more about traditional culture of Turkey, you can visit the Etrim Village where you can see Turkish rugs being made and hear about the process. Or you can travel to a more remote part of the Aegean Coast to Gumusluk, a traditional fishing village. Appreciating the landscape of the area may be best done by gulet (a local boat - traditionally a sailing vessel) on a Blue Cruise.
