Brindisi once marked the end of the Apian Way, the most important of all Roman roads which began in Rome. The port city is now an important agricultural and manufacturing center in the region of Puglia with a protected harbor. The city has two large castles and a good number of historic churches primarily of the Romanesque era. North of the port is the lovely wetland park of Torre Guaceto and a series of nice beach areas. Inland from the port are some lovely Puglian towns including Lecce, famous for its mainly Baroque center featuring ornate churches and palazzo built from the local Lecce stone. The town of Maglie offers the huge Palazzo Tamborino with its massive and lovely garden. The small town of Ostuni, northwest of Brindisi, shares the diocese with Brindisi and is famous for its white hilltop buildings and churches. In the village of Alberobello are the unique and archaic Trullo houses which have been designated a UNESCO site.
