The impressive port of Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia and has long been one of the island's most important cities with its deep port area, surrounded by swamps on two sides. Founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BCE and conquered by Rome in the Punic Wars, it has subsequently changed hands many times until Italy was united in the mid-19th century. The hilly old town section is known as the Castello and offers guests good views of the port and a number of important museums. Most of the important sites of the city are within walking distance of the Castello including the Cathedral, the Botanic Garden, and the necropolis.

There are a number of popular natural attractions in and near Cagliari including Cap Sant'Elia (one of the city's hills) and the well-known hiking trails at the Devil's Saddle. Just west of the Cape is the salty lagoon known as Molentargius, famous for thousands of flamingos. Just north of the Cape is the Poetta Beach, a long and well-developed resort area. The UNESCO Nuraghe town known as Su Nuraxi is the largest in the immediate vicinity. On a small narrow peninsula southwest of the city is the archaeological site at Nora. Farther away is Italy's 4th largest island, Sant'Antioco, which also has several archaeological sites, museums with artifacts from ancient civilizations, and some nice beaches.
