The deep and protected harbor at Cartagena attracted ancient sailors beginning with the Carthaginians who established a trading settlement in the late 3rd century BC and named it New Carthage (meaning new city). It is still Spain's most important Naval base. Arriving by ship you will be struck by the hilltop fortresses guarding each side of the harbor and Conception Castle sitting on a hill behind the port area. This area is where the Romans built an important city after defeating the Carthaginians in the Punic Wars. The recently discovered and renovated Roman Theater is the centerpiece of Cartagena's historic old town. In addition, there are the Underwater Archaeology Museum, the Archaeology Museum, and the ruins of the Cathedral. During the early 20th century there was an artistic renaissance with many lovely Art Nouveau buildings constructed, including the City Hall.

In addition to Cartagena, the other major city in the region is Murcia, which is in the center of what is called the orchard of Spain, due to its agricultural richness. The Murcia Cathedral is an impressive Baroque building. The Santa Clara Convent Museum is the most highly-regarded attraction in the city.

North of the lagoon Mar Menor is the coastal resort area of Torrevieja, well-known for its international clientele, especially the English speaking expatriates. The city has many nearby beaches that are among the highest rated in Spain for their water quality. Other popular beaches are on the Manga sand bar that separates the Mar Menor, Europe's largest lagoon and protected wildlife reserve, from the Mediterranean.
