The East Aegean island of Chios (often pronounced HE-os) is just 7 kilometers from Anatolian Turkey and is the 5th largest of Greek islands. It is dry and mountainous and mostly sparsely inhabited with the exception of the capital of the same name. Over the last two hundred years Chios has experienced two devasting events which shaped its culture. After the locals rose up to fight for Greek independence from the Ottomans, the Ottomans sent in an army which devastated the island and its population (1822). In 1881 an earthquake destroyed most of the historic buildings in the port. For this reason, Chios Town is fairly modern and built in a Neoclassical style. On the north side of the harbor is Chios Castle, a walled area in the city which was constructed by the Genoese before the Ottomans captured the island. The primary beach areas on the island mainly dot the eastern coast, though there are remote and scenic beaches on the west side as well. Chios' most famous agricultural product is mastic, an aromatic resin from a bush that was used from ancient time as a gum, in cooking and as an adhesive. The medieval towns of Pyrgi and Mesta are popular tourist destination whose history is entwined with mastic production. The most important tourist attraction on the island is Nea Moni, an UNESCO World Heritage site which is neither new (11th century) nor a monastery (it is now a convent), but offers world renowned mosaics and great views.
