Key Attractions: Venetian Fortress, Chania Archaeological Museum, Nearby beaches, Agia Triada Monastery, Kournas Lake, Samaria Gorge, Askeordalos Botanical Garden, Sfentoni Cave Rethymnon, Arkadi Monastery Palace at Knossos

Like Heraklion to the east, Chania has a long history reaching back to the Paleolithic era. It was a center of Minoan culture though there are no significant ruins such as those at Knossos. However, later eras have left wonderful sites and rich architectural wonders. The port of Souda is well-protected from the Aegean currents as it sits in a hidden bay behind the Akrotiri Peninsula on the northern coast of Crete. Open to the sea on the other side of the peninsula is lovely Chania, with marinas and beaches inviting visitors. The most famous marina is the Venetian port where the remains of coastal buildings of the Venetian era are colorful and inviting. The Chania Archaeology Museum is considered one of the best small museums in Europe. To the west are a series of inviting beaches. Outside the city are the Askordalos Botanical Garden, the impressive Samaria Gorge, and the caves at Kournas Lake. More Venetian influence can be seen in the port city of Rethymnon and the nearby Arkadi Monastery. The incredible Palace at Knossos is about 2.5 hours away, but is worth the effort for those interested in the Minoan culture.

Geography and Population

Chania is a small city of about 60,000 that spreads out along the northwest coast of Crete in several distinct areas including Souda, where the ships dock; Akrotiri, the large peninsula where the airport is located; and the main town of Chania. The area around the main town is relatively flat, but there are some significant hills on the Akrotiri peninsula and rugged mountains to the south.
