Calvi is a small port in a large bay on the northeastern section of Corsica. Like the rest of the island, its historic culture is fiercely independent, but more closely tied to Italian than French. During the Middle Ages it was dominated by the Tuscans, and specifically the Pisas. But with the rise of Genoese power, the island was dominated by that city for the next 4 centuries. Calvi was one of the island's most Genoese towns. The small citadel sits high above the harbor overlooking the immense Bay of Calvi. Visitors can find great views by walking the ramparts. Inland, the Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Serra offers incredible vistas of northwestern Corsican terrain. Calvi is a great starting point for day trips to stunning natural sights, rustic villages, trendy seafront resort areas, and family friendly beaches. The Bay of Porto area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is the home to one of the most dramatic calanque coastal areas of the world and is best seen from the water. The historic inland town of Corte offers its hilltop citadel and the island's University. Saint-Florent is the Portofino of Corsica, with haute cuisine and large yachts on a beautiful bay.
