At the narrowest point of the Dardenelles, the small port city of Canakkale (pronounced CHAH nah kahl ee) is at a politically strategic point which explains why the two most popular attractions nearby are military in nature. The ancient city of Troy, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, was discovered by German-American adventurer Heinrich Schliemann in the late 19th century. The hill overlooking the Aegean entry into the Dardenelles has been the site of at least 9 different historic cities, the last built during the Roman era and called Ilium. Across the straits is the Galipolli peninsula where one of World War I's most tragic and important campaigns took place, known in the west as the Battle of Gallipoli and in Turkey as the Battle of Canakkale. Scattered over a wide area are battle sites, cemeteries, memorials and museums. The city of Canakkale offers visitors an Archaeological Museum, a Military Marine Museum and the Cimenlik Castle. Directly across the straits and near the ferry terminal is the twin to Cimenlik, the Kilibahir Castle. Southwest of Canakkale is the resort town of Guzelyali.
