Unlike most coastal cities, Cannes is fairly young. Until about 300 years ago its economic center was the two Lerins Islands just off the coast. Starting in the 19th century, wealthy British travelers built town homes in the Old City which are now featured as part of local walking tours. However, the biggest attraction within the city is La Croisette, the palm tree lined boulevard that curves along the bay where beach goers gather. Tourists often get their picture taken at the western end of La Croisette at the Film Festival Congress, where the world's premier film festival is hosted. Just west of the Congress is La Suquet, a hill with a defensive tower, the Chapel of St. Anne, a small archaeological museum and beautiful views of the Old Town and La Croisette . Off the coast are the Lerins Islands of Ile Sainte-Marguerite, with its a Museum of the Sea housing the remains of shipwrecks, and Ile Saint-Honore, with a scenic monastery offering wines made by the monks. Most will use Cannes as a starting point for inland sites such as the beautiful hill-top Saint-Paul-de-Vence; Grasse, the international capital for the perfume industry; and Antibes, with is historic castles, parks and Billionaires Quay where some of the world's most impressive yachts summer. Southwest of Cannes is bohemian Saint-Tropez. To the east are the wealthy cities Nice and Monaco.

Geography and Population

Cannes' old town is situated on land that was once a swamp just to the east of La Suquet hill. The beaches are calm due to the Lerins islands of Sainte-Marguerita and Saint-Honore sitting just off the coast. The small city has a population of just under 75,000.
