Corfu, Greece Cuisine | Where to Eat

Popular Local Cuisine: Ionian Cuisine - The Ionian Greeks often serve the typical Greek dishes, but have their own culinary traditions that include other more western influences. Tomatoes are much more common in Ionian than in other Greek cuisines. Among the most popular dishes on the islands of Corfu, Cephalonia and Zakynthos are the mezo called Riganada which is the local variation on the Italian bruschetta. Toasted bread slices are sprinkled with olive oil, spread with tomatoes and feta, topped with an oregano-based condiment, pickled grape vine shoots and salt-cured olives (throumpes). The local variation on pita may include meats or octopus with rice or leeks, spinach or other vegetables. Bourbourelia is a tasty local bean soup. In Corfu the most famous dish is Bourtheto made with boiled fish (usually scorpion fish) topped with a spicy, lemony red sauce. Aliada is octopus with garlic and potatoes. Another popular Ionian dish is Pastizzada, chicken or veal in a tomato sauce made with garlic, onions, cinnamon and cloves, served on spaghetti.

Desserts of the region include several made with the local almonds, such as Mantoles and an almond pie. Pasteli blends honey and sesame into a delectable sweet. Galaktompoureko is a custard with a crust. Robola is a famous dry, white wine made from a grape of the same name that has grown in the region for at least a millennium.
