Corfu sits at the northernmost and westernmost points of Greece and is off the coast of both Greece and Albania. Its strategic position at the southern end of the Adriatic has made it the center of conflict since ancient times. It was a central player in the Peloponnesian Wars and near the final naval battle of the struggle between Augustus and Marc Antony. Later, as a Venetian colony it was besieged by the Ottomans 4 times, but never conquered by them. During the 19th century it spent several years as a British Protectorate. The city is a UNESCO site which commemorates its colorful history and honors its foreign rulers. The old town is 2 to 3 kilometers from where the ships dock and nestled between two massive fortresses - one called the old fortress and other (how did you know?) called the new fortress. Both were built by the Venetians and lived up to their purpose of defending the island from capture. The Old Town is an amalgam of palaces, churches, squares, Venetian-style promenades, British gardens, a cricket field and, naturally, tavernas and shopping. Just south of the city is the famous and ornate Achilleion, built by Empress Elizabeth of Austria-Hungary in the 1890s. Long a mecca for tourists, the island's beaches are renowned . On the west side of the island is the small town of Paleokastritsa, named for its Byzantine castle and famous for the nearby Monastery of the Virgin. The whole island is open for exploring by bus, on foot, by bike or on the back of a horse.
