Arrival is Cesme (pronounced CHESH-may) will likely be by tender as the small port and marina do not have a berth large enough for most cruise ships. The tender dock is across a small marina from the commercial center of town which is next to the Cesme Castle, the area's most impressive historic attraction which houses two historical museums. One museum features artifacts from the nearby ancient city of Erythrai and the other focuses on the events of the Russo-Turkish War. Cesme and the surrounding peninsula are a center of beach tourism with impressive resorts and spas, seaaonal homes for wealthy Turks and foreigners and windswept beaches. Nearby Ilica has long been famous for its geothermal waters some of which feed into the sea offering bath like swimming areas. The winds create ideal conditions for windsurfing in Ilica, Alacati and several other areas. Several nice beaches are protected from the winds making them appropriate for standard sunworshiping. The city of Izmir is about an hour away and offers a few limited historic attractions, including an old Jewish neighborhood. The popular Greek and Roman ruins at Ephesus along with the Ephesus Museum and Mary's House are less than two hours southeast of Cesme and definitely worth the effort for anyone with an interest in history.
