Dubrovnik is one of the great tourist destinations along the Mediterranean coast and it the third most frequented cruise port in Europe. During the summer season, it is not uncommon for 4 or 5 cruise ships to be visiting the city simultaneously. To accommodate this heavy traffic, the city has built several docks at Gruz just to the north of the city center. Smaller ships may anchor near the old town and tender directly there. Even some larger ships do this at times, so be sure to check with your cruise line to determine if your ship will dock at Gruz or anchor near the Old Town.

Historically known as Ragusa, it was independent for much of its history and was one of the few maritime republics to rival Venice during its height of power. Like Venice, it was a cultural crossroad where east met west. Through the ages there have been significant populations of Jews and Muslims who were an integral part of the city's trading success. The historic center is an enclave surrounded by an impressive wall and several forts and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within the walls is a living urban area made of primarily Renaissance-era churches, palaces, monasteries, and residences used to this day. The wall itself is one of the town's most popular attractions. The scenic port town of Cavtat, just to the southeast of Dubrovnik, has several historic buildings but is best known for its views of the sea. In the area near Dubrovnik there are several popular natural parks mostly on islands, such as the nearby Lokrum, adjacent to where cruise ships anchor. Lokrum has a monastery, a botanical garden, and several beaches - one of which is said to be frequented by nudists. A 90-minute ferry gets you to the larger and less crowded Mljet, a national park.

Geography and Population

Dubrovnik is situated ideally to keep intruders out. The impressive rock of Mount Srd presses the city against the coast and made invasion by land nearly impossible, while coastal islands and the rocky shore made it difficult to invade by sea. Today, the metropolitan area stretches quite a distance up and down the coastal shelf and has a population of over 40,000 with just over 20,000 living in the city. The city is at the southern end of what is known as the Dalmatian Riviera.
