Captured during the War of the Spanish Succession at the beginning of the 18th century and awarded to England as spoils, Gibraltar has since been a thorn in the diplomatic relations between England and Spain. Long a strategic military center and base for the British Navy, the last 30 years have seen a shift in its economy away from military toward banking and tourism. Spanish visitors come for the duty-free shopping and dramatic vistas and cruise ships stop at the large port as they transit the straits. Gibraltarians have a unique culture which blends English and Spanish with strong Italian, Maltese, Portuguese and Jewish influences. The territory's most popular attractions are the impressive Rock of Gibraltar and the Barbary Macaques that live along its slope and represent the only population of wild primates in Europe. Many visitors ascend to the top of the Rock either by vehicle or using the cable car which takes 6 minutes. Natural attractions in the area include the rugged mountainside with its Botanical Garden and park area with hiking trails. Some visitors sail the waters around Gibraltar to view whales and dolphins which are common in the surrounding waters. At the southern tip of the peninsula are the Point Europa Lighthouse, the Ibrahim al-Ibrahim Mosque and the Church of Our Lady Europa, originally built as a Mosque and Lighthouse. Many of the best places for shopping are on Main Street, a pedestrian-only street just 2 km from the dock.
