Genoa has long been one of the leading ports of the Mediterranean and the capital of Liguria, the coastal Italian state that includes much of the Italian Riviera. It is also one of the most under-appreciated tourist destinations in Europe. This historic port has the largest historic center of any city in Europe and features the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rolli Palaces, late Renaissance and Baroque homes built during Genoa's Golden Age designed to host official state visitors and house the city's leading families. These buildings and the area surrounding them have been revived in the last 20 years through significant tourism investment. The hilly and winding streets of Genoa and its narrow alleys are inviting and timeless. Around the old port are several museums including the impressive Aquarium, the second largest in Europe. Heading south along the coast of Liguria are the colorful towns of the Italian Riviera including Portofino, Rapallo and Sestri Levante, and the UNESCO World Heritage Cinque Terre. Inland is the lovely Aveto and Capanne di Marcarolo Natural Parks.

How Far?

Taxis in Genoa use meters, but it is always advisable to negotiate your fare before entering a taxi. The starting fare is 6,50 Euros and the charge is 0,90 Euros per kilometer. There are some per person fixed rate routes from the bus stations, but always determine the fare before entering. Though the Cruise Terminal is close to the old port and the historic center, it is advisable to take a taxi as the walking route is through an industrial area. Once you reach the Aquarium or Historic area most sites are within reasonable walking distance of each other though routes can be hilly.

There is bus service between the airport and the two main train stations at Principe (near the cruise terminal) and Brignole (in the historic center). Bus tickets are 6 Euros and include a 60 minute ride on the public bus system. A city bus pass for the entire day is only 4,50 Euros if you are up for the adventure.
