Haifa is northern Israel's largest city and the country's most important port and industrial center. The major attractions in the city are the Baha'i World Center and its beautiful Garden on the slope of Mount Carmel; Elijah's Cave, where tradition says that Elijah prayed that the prophets of Baal be struck down; and Stella Maris, the Carmelite monastery.

Most will want to travel to the historic capital of Jerusalem, which certainly has the most contentious and dramatic history of any city in the Western World. Many tourists are, in fact, religious pilgrims visiting one of the world's holiest cities, considered sacred by three of the world's most important religions. For Jews, Jerusalem is the center of their historic homeland and the site of the two most important temples in their history built by Solomon and Herod. What remains of the second temple is the Western Wall at the point where the Jewish and Arab Quarters meet. For Christians, Jerusalem is the site of Jesus' persecution, crucifixion and rebirth. Christians often take tours that follow the route which tradition says Jesus took on his way to the cross, known as the Via Delarosa. In addition, it is the location of churches dating back centuries from many of the world's Christian denominations. Muslims consider Jerusalem the third most holy site in their religion after Mecca and Medina. Islamic tradition is that Mohammed traveled to Jerusalem and ascended to heaven from a large rock on top of the Temple Mount. On this spot, the early Islamic rulers built the stunning Dome of the Rock and the Al Aqsa Mosque.

Beside Haifa itself, northern Israel offers a wide variety of tourist attractions from the Sea of Galilee with its locations from the life of Jesus, to the fertile Golan Heights, to Nazareth and Tzippori with their many historic artifacts and buildings, to the coastal towns of Acre and Caesarea Maritime. And for those interested in modern Israel, Tel Aviv is the center of the country's culture and economy.
