Sandstone Monoliths in Meteora

Igoumenitsa is an undiscovered gem. It has long been an entry point to mainland Greece from Italy and the Adriatic. Significant ferry traffic docks at the port. The city has a lively waterfront and vibrant shopping district, as well as a new Archaeological Museum. A major highway has just been completed connecting Igoumenitsa with northern Greece and Turkey. Before the highway opened the region was somewhat isolated.

Now it is the gateway to several destinations that were talked about but rarely visited by international travelers. Foremost on the list of sites is Meteora, the UNESCO World Heritage Site that features pillar-like mountains topped with Byzantine Monasteries. Several coastal towns have the Greek island ambiance but with more undisturbed authenticity. The small city of Ioannina played an important role during the Ottoman era and features a scenic lake and a rustic island village. The Zagori region is a group of isolated mountainside villages that grew wealthy with trade in medicinal herbs grown in the region. For those interested in ancient mysteries, a visit to the Oracle of the Dead is a must, located near the port city of Parga.

Geography and Population

The port of Igoumenitsa has 10,000 residents and has long been a ferry port for visitors from Italy and other ports along the Adriatic. It was long isolated from the rest of Greece because of the Epirus Mountains, but with the recent opening of a major highway, it is expected to grow significantly.

It is in the far northwestern corner of Greece and only 17 miles from Corfu Town (Kerkyra) by ferry.
