Ischia is an island in the Bay of Naples that has long been a popular tourist spot for Europeans looking for sun, sand and healing hot springs. Volcanic and mountainous, the island's first castle was built on an islet off the eastern coast of the island in the 5th Century BC. The islet was connected to Ischia by a stone bridge and in the 15th Century AD and a new castle built by Alfonso D'Aragona. It is the island's most iconic attraction. The island is surrounded by beaches of all kinds, including a few that offer hot jets of thermal water from the volcanic springs that dot the island. The city of Florio, on the east coast, features historic homes and gardens. Small cruise vessels will dock in Ischia Porto, while larger ships are likely to dock at Ischia Ponte near the Aragonese Castle.
