With over 3500 years of human habitation, Izmir (formerly Smyrna) is now a very modern city with few remnants of its storied past. In 1922 at the end of the Greco-Turkish War, almost the entire city was destroyed by a fire and the significant Greek population evacuated the city. On the southern shore of the narrow bay where Izmir sits are the cruise terminals and a coastal region known as Konak, where modern Izmir shows itself to visitors and where a few intriguing historic ruins remain. There is not much left of Kadifekale Castle, but views from the hill it occupies add to the appeal. The Agora is a large area where Greek and early Romans situated a market and where today you can see columns and arches of the historic center. Another area that was not destroyed in 1922 was the Jewish Quarter of Karatas, where historic synagogues can be visited. One of the city's most popular attractions is the elevator tower called Asansor which offers a great view of the city and harbor. Along the water are the beautiful promenade called Kordon and the Konak Square, including the iconic Clock Tower which has become the symbol of the city. Izmir provides convenient access to two of the most important Greco-Roman ruin sites in Turkey, Ephesus and Pergamum.

Cesme is a small port near the end of the Cesme Peninsula and is today the center of a rich resort area that feature lovely beaches and spas. The historic fortress of Cesme has been renovated and converted to a museum. Near Cesme are the resort areas of Ilica, famous for their hot springs and the beach town of Alacati.
