The Dodecanese island of Kos is the second most popular in the archipelago (after Rhodes), due to its well-tended beaches and numerous historic sites. Most of the historic sites are very near the port city of Kos (often called Kos Town to distinguish it from the island), making it very convenient for tours. Adjacent to where cruise ships dock is the Nerantzia Castle, built by the Knights of St. John to protect the island from the Ottomans. Kos is the birthplace of Hippocrates (the father of medicine) who taught his students under a Plane Tree in a small open area near the castle. There is still a Plane Tree there (not the original) and a memorial in his honor where nearly every tour will stop. Within a short distance are a well-preserved Odeon, the remains of the Agora and a Stadium plus a Roman villa. Not far from town is the most impressive site, the Asklepieion, an ancient hospital/spa named in honor of the god of healing. The village of Zia in the hills of Kos is the most popular tourist stop inland and features shops that sell the local crafts. The beaches of Kos are justly famous, offering nice sand and mostly calm waters.
