Korcula is the most central of the Dalmatian islands and therefore has easy access to much of Dalmatia via ferry, high-speed catamaran and water taxies. Though less focused on tourism than Hvar, Korcula's old walled city is a smaller, less crowded version of Dubrovnik. It sits on a small rocky peninsula surrounded by an impressive wall with several defensive towers. St. Mark's Cathedral and the Rector's Palace come to us from the same Venetian era of the Renaissance when the towns of the Adriatic trade routes developed rich cultural traditions. Just off the west coast of Korcula are several small islands in the Skoji chain that have beautiful beaches, a Franciscan Monastery and lots of opportunities for connecting with nature in and out of the water. On Korcula itself are a number of seaside and inland towns and villages, such as Smokvica and Vela Luka, that offer a homey authenticity and great island views, along with some excellent local wines. The Peljesac Peninsula is long and narrow like its island neighbors and offers the historic port of Orebic and the salt ponds and oyster beds of Ston. The National Park on the smaller island of Mljet is accessible on tours that provide opportunities to see Dalmatian nature in an unspoiled state. For those who want to see the Dalmatian coast's version of St. Tropez, with yachts and seafront villas, a trip to Hvar can be arranged.

Geography and Population

The island of Korcula is roughly equidistant from Dubrovnik and Split and, like the other islands in the Dalmatian archipelago, is a long narrow island running east to west with an impressive mountain range running like a spine through its center. Korcula Island has a population of just over 16,000 with almost 3,000 living in Korcula Town and roughly 4,000 in each of the other significant towns of Blato and Vela Luka.
