Kotor is an ancient city located in the deep and fjord-like Bay of Kotor. The major port of the new nation of Montenegro, Kotor's small Old Town is surrounded by a massive defensive wall built by the Venetians. Within this area is the medieval city which contains the city's attractions, including the St. Tryphon Cathedral built in 1166 and the Square of Arms bordered by the Armory and Ducal Palace. Though damaged by a recent earthquake and ignored by tourists until recently, cruise ships have helped to revive interest and tourism in Kotor which is the center of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The other major tourism site in the area is the coastal town of Budva, which also boasts a small walled city. Budva is Montenegro's most popular tourist destination because of its combination of historic significants and lovely beaches. It attracts many wealthy visitors some of whom have built summer homes in the area. Within the Bay of Kotor are the beautiful Baroque town of Perast and the popular Our Lady of the Rocks island and church. Just over an hour from Kotor is the scenic Lake Skadar National Park, which is very popular with birders. Montenegro's capital of Podgorica is accessible from Kotor via mountain or coastal roads both offering wonderful views of the country
. The capital is a mostly modern city which is the center of the Montenegran culture.

Geography and Population

Approaching Kotor on your cruise ship is one of the highlights of the visit as the city is situated a long way from the coast inside an ancient and deep riverbed which is often mistaken for a fjord. After passing through two narrow channels cruise ships reach the wider part of the bay where Kotor and a number of other small coastal towns lie. Kotor has a population of just over 5000 and with its neighbor, Dobrota, has a combined population of just over 13,000.
