The small city of Kavala, on the northern coast of the Aegean, has many attractions for cruisers. Neapolis (its original Greek name) was founded by the Greeks and Thracians. It is near the important ruins of Philippi, founded by Alexander the Great's father Phillip II of Macedonia. Philippi was the first place in Europe visited by Paul the Apostle and the place he wrote his New Testament letters to the Philippians. It was an important port for the Byzantines and the Ottomans who built and rebuilt the fortress that overlooks the old city (Panagia). It is the birthplace of Muhammad Ali, the founder of modern Egypt, and his birth home and the madrassah he built are important attractions. There are several "blue flag" beaches rated for their clean waters and excellent facilities. Nearby is the huge delta of the Nestor River, where bird-watching, hiking, and canoeing are popular. Kavala was an important tobacco growing area for a couple centuries, so it features a Tobacco Museum. The local wineries offer tours and some excellent vintages. The Alistrati Cave is a great place to see massive stalactites and stalagmites.
