Southern (Greek) Cyprus is one of the best developed tourist areas in the Mediterranean despite that diplomatic turmoil caused by the split of the island and at the present time access to the Northern (Turkish) side is not generally a problem. The turbulent history of this large island is not a new phenomenon. In fact, there is hardly an historical period when control of the island was not contentious. However, this exciting history has produced an island with amazing and beautiful historic sites from many ages. The Khirokitia site shows how the Cypriots lived in prehistory going back as far as the 7th millenia BCE. Sometime later, the legend of the birth of Aphrodite in the seafoam of the south coast was born. It was during this time that the Phoenicians, often dominated by the Persians, set up trading posts here, especially around the excellent harbor at Limassol. The Roman ruins at Paphos are part of an UNESCO site that includes houses of the very wealthy, the Tombs of the Kings and stunning mosaics. Scattered all over the island are Byzantine churches and monasteries. In many places high promontories are dominated by fortresses built and rebuilt by Byzantine Greeks, Venetians, Crusaders, Ottomans and others. The city of Nicosia is the only split capital city in the world so you can see both the Greek and Turkish sides if you visit there. Natural attractions are abundant as well in mountain parks and isolated coastal areas. However, the Cypriots have not forgotten family fun and there are a wide variety of water and adventure parks offering exciting activities for all ages.
