Lipari's attraction to cruise ships is its active volcanic geology which is shared by the other islands in the archipelago. Neolithic settlements developed a rich culture here for the same reason. It was the center of the obsidian trade in pre-history as soon as adventurous boaters discovered the hard black volcanic rock there. The island of Lipari was until recently a center for Pumice mining, but now the primary industry is tourism with many seasonal visitors and residents. Tourism has long been a part of its culture because, along with obsidian, the island is known for its geothermal waters and muds which have been considered medicinal. The volcanoes on Lipari are minimally active, but those on its near neighbor Vulcano are continuously active. Vulcano is the nearest place to explore an active volcano. Visitors to Vulcano hike, boat, and relax is hot mud baths along the sea. The islands of Salina and Panarea offer nice resorts and quiet beaches. Though it may be too far for a day trip (depending on how long you are in Lipari), the island of Stromboli is considered by some the world's most active volcano and with any luck your ship will sail by the island when it is dark.
