Livorno is the gateway to one of the richest cultural areas in Italy - Tuscany. The countryside of Tuscany combines rolling hills with multicolored agricultural plains and valleys. This breadbasket produces renowned agricultural products such as Chianti wine. Hilltop towns and cities on rivers, many founded during the Roman era, came of age in the medieval and Renaissance times. Lucca and Pisa are walled cities with stunning Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architectural masterpieces within their walls. Pisa's iconic Leaning Tower is part of a much larger complex of Romanesque structures which includes a Cathedral, a Baptistry, and a historic graveyard. Florence is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance, where artists created some of the great masterpieces of the era. The Ufizzi Gallery is small compared to the Louvre but holds some of the world's greatest pictorial works. The Florence Duomo is the result of the work of several geniuses working over an extended period. And there are several smaller and less known urban centers like Sienna and the town of San Gimignano that draw tourists for their subtler charms.

No less important to the appeal of Tuscany is its food, flowing from the region's agricultural fecundity, and culture, warm and welcoming - relaxed and sophisticated. There is good reason why Tuscany is considered the heartland of the Italian peninsula.

Geography and Population

During Roman times Tuscany was among the most important agricultural areas serving the Empire, because of the small but fertile Arno River valley that stretches across the region. Rolling hills are the most predominant geographical feature. Almost 4 million residents live in the region, roughly 6 percent of the Italian population. Florence has a population of 375,000. Livorno has over 150,000 and Pisa, Lucca and Sienna have between 50,000 and 100,000.
