The Principality of Monaco is one of the world's smallest countries and is ruled by Prince Albert II of the ancient Grimaldi Family. The tiny, dense and wealthy enclave is most famous for its ornate and exclusive Casino, the premier Grand Prix motor race, its classic Oceanographic Museum and Ville Monaco, location of the Prince's Palace, the Cathedral and other historic buildings. Sophisticated is probably the best adjective to describe the port. Surrounded on three sides by France and on the other by the Mediterranean, Monaco is part of the French Riviera offering the pebble beach at Larvotto and designer shopping and haute cuisine in abundance. The recently complete cruise terminal puts cruise visitors in the center of the port area and makes access to the local attractions very easy. West of Monaco is the French city of Menton and the Italian Riviera cities of Ventimiglia and Sanremo. Moving eastward toward the central Cote d'Azur is the rocky hill town of Eve, welcoming Villefranche-sur-Mer, metropolitan Nice, wealthy Antibes and Cannes, most famous for its film festival.

The terrain rises quickly as you move away from the shoreline. The population of the small country is just over 35,000.
