Mahon (spelled Mao locally,) on the Balearic island of Minorca (also Menorca) is the capital of the island and has the second deepest harbor in the world after Honolulu. Narrow and 5 kilometers long, it is one of the highlights of any cruise visit, featuring several seaside fortresses from past eras along the coasts. Minorca was of significant strategic importance as late as the mid-20th century and was invaded and ruled by the Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals (briefly), Byzantines, Moors, Aragonese and Catalans, French, British and Spanish. Each culture has left its mark, often on particular localities. For example, Port Mahon has a strong British influence with Georgian building dominating the old city. Cuitadella de Menorca (called simply Cuitadella locally), on the west end of the island, is more Spanish and Catalan and was the capital until the British moved it to Mahon. There are Moorish elements in the old capital as well. Since the mid-20th century, Minorca has been a popular summer holiday spot for international tourists, especially the British. The island is the site of many prehistoric stone structures which can be found in nearly every region and date from the mid-second millennium. The natural wonders of Minorca are significant, especially the wild flowers, orchids, butterflies and the birds in the interior. The island is designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The beaches are very popular and many are in small coves along the rocky coast.
