Malaga has been inhabited since at least Phoenician times and was an important port during the Roman era. A partially excavated amphitheater remains from that era. The city was ruled by Islamic conquerors from the early 8th century through 1487. During this period Islamic, Christian and Jewish groups shared Malaga and the Muslim rulers brought their art, culture and scholarship to the region. The historic monuments of the area show distinct Islamic influences and some originated as Islamic palaces, castles and other buildings. Within Malaga itself are the Gibralfaro Castle, high on a hill overlooking the city, and the Alcazaba Fortress, connected to the castle through a fortified passage on the side of the hill. After the re-conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, the massive Malaga Cathedral was built. About an hour and a half from Malaga is the old city of Granada and the Red Palace, known commonly as the Alhambra. It is considered the finest example of Spanish Islamic architecture and is one of the most popular attractions in Spain.

Geography and Population

Malaga is the central city of the famous Costa del Sol, which has long attracted sun worshipers. The beaches are beautiful and well-developed, with a few more isolated stretches. Tourism has brought the coastal area considerable wealth and built many lovely coastal towns, such as Marbella and just up the mountain slope, Mijas. The huge Cavern at Nerja is just inland from the resort city.
