Recommended Attractions: Gefyra, Monemvasia, Agia Sofia, Malmsey wine, Elkomenou Christou, Mystras, Sparta

Monemvasia is a small island off the coast of the southeastern region of the Peloponnese, known as the Gibraltar of the East for its 300 meter high table top hill and medieval fortress. The island got the name from the Greek for "single entry," which is rather appropriate for a fortress. Ships dock on the mainland in the tourist town of Gefyra, which offers cafes, shops and nearby beaches with opportunities for scuba and snorkeling. However, most come to cross the short causeway to the island, which features a beautifully restored Byzantine town (Lower Town), two excellent churches, the fortress and a museum. The one tour that most lines offer is to Mystras with a quick stop in Sparta. Mystras was the last stronghold for the Byzantine Greeks trying to fight the Ottoman Turks. It, too, is a high fortress with an impressive castle and fine examples of medieval Byzantine architecture. Spartans may have been great warriors, but they were not so great when it came to city-building. A visit to the former Greek power will offer you more atmosphere than ruins.

Geography and Population
