The small coastal city of Motril was selected by cruise lines because of its proximity to Granada and the Alhambra Palace, one of Spain's most famous attractions. The Alhambra, or Red Palace, was built in the 13th century and was the last great structure built by the Moors. After being retaken during the Reconquista, the Christian rulers added to the palace and used it as their own. It is a truly stunning human achievement and something most will want to see. The surrounding city of Granada is also an attraction with its Gothic/Renaissance Cathedral, the stunning Royal Chapel, the Charterhouse and several neighborhoods dating back to Moorish times. Motril proper is about 5 kilometers inland from where the port docks and offers simpler charms and fewer tourists. There are several nice beach areas within about 20 minutes of Motril in an area commonly known as Costa Tropicale. The central city of the Costa del Sol, Malaga, with its Moorish castle and strong Arab influences, is just over an hour away. Small mountain and coastal villages dot the areas to the west, north and east of Motril.
