Mykonos is the second most popular tourist destination in the Cycladic Islands after Santorini and has its own unique appeal. It competes with Ibiza for the young, beautiful party crowd and like that Spanish island has a wide variety of lovely beaches, each with their own character. Some feature a frenetic party atmosphere where the music starts early and keeps pounding late for the partially dressed or completely undressed beach lovers. The town of Mykonos (locally known as Chora, meaning Town) is one of the Cyclades most scenic with its iconic windmills and the Little Venice area where whitewashed houses hang over the sea and sport colorful balconies. The tavernas in this section are famous for the colors at sunset. Inside the island is the town of Ano Mera, set on a semi-arid hill and featuring the lovely Monastery of Panagia Tourliani. If you are not into beaches, tavernas, and sunsets Mykonos still has an important appeal. It is only 10 kilometers by ferry to the uninhabited island of Delos, which is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. It has been considered a spiritual place since before the Athenians rose to prominence and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Note about ships docking at Mykonos: Most ships now dock at the new port not far north of Chora, though smaller vessels sometimes use the docks in the old port. However, it is important to be flexible when it comes to docking in Mykonos. Weather and rough seas can prevent docking, so it is not uncommon for ships that were scheduled to dock to anchor and tender passengers onto the island.

Smaller ships from some lines spend the morning anchoring off Delos and then proceed to Mykonos for the late afternoon and evening.

How Far?

The consensus regarding taxis in Mykonos is that they are difficult to get because of high demand and low supply.  If plan to go to one beach and stay there, a transfer provided by your cruise line may be the best option. If you want to tour the island a rental car for the day or scooters (if you are not easily intimidated) may be your best option.  Water taxis are also available to several beach areas.
