Nassau is perhaps the most visited intermediate port on Caribbean itineraries and offers some nice attractions and activities to cruise passengers.  Cruise Lines commonly offer tours and experiences at the Atlantis Resort across a bridge from Nassau on Paradise Island which has transformed this destination.  The resort offers an impressive casino, a water park, an aquarium and dolphin experiences as well as other attractions.  Besides the casino all these activities require an admission fee.  The other kind of activity often offered by the lines are water activities in this shallow portion of the Atlantic.  Snorkeling is particularly appealing for those who are new to the sport.  There are two impressive golf courses available.  There is another resort area at Cable Beach with another large casino.  For those who want to go out on their own, there are local agents who will transport you to the destination or attraction of your choice.  Or if you want to walk around town there are a few historical sites worth visiting.  Shopping on Bay Street ranges from excellent duty free shopping for jewelry, liquor and other items to the Famous Straw market with its inexpensive (some cheap in the bad sense) array of local crafts.

Geography and Population

Nassau is the capital city of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and located on the island of New Providence.  The port is located between the islands of New Providence (Nassau) and Paradise Island (Atlantis Resort).  The metropolitan area has a population of almost 1/4 million which represents nearly 3/4 of the entire Commonwealth's population.  Like the rest of the Bahamas the island of New Providence is located in the Atlantic and is coral in its origin.  Though commonly called a Caribbean nation, the Bahamas (and the neighboring Turks and Caicos) is not Caribbean at all.
