Nice is the second most popular tourist destination in France, after Paris, and the country's 5th largest city with almost 1 million residents in the metropolitan area. Nice was established by the Greeks from Marseilles around 350 BCE and named after the god Nike. It was not part of France until 1860. During the 19th century many visitors from England built vacation homes, which explains why the waterfront Boulevard is called Promenade des Anglais. The city features museums dedicated to the art of Chagall and Matisse, as well as several other museums devoted primarily to 20th century artists. The city has many scenic squares, great shopping opportunities, famous beaches and wonderful cuisine, including famous local items - ratatouille and Salade Nicoise. Because of its unique history and proximity to Italy, the language and culture of the area show strong Italian influences. There are also large populations from other countries, creating a city of diverse cultures and influences.
