Portofino Harbor MarinaPortofino is a small fishing village with a long history and since 1950 has been a magnet for wealthy vacationers looking for a quiet spot to relax. The village itself is the attraction here. If you are looking for more than relaxation then you should probably take an excursion elsewhere. But it you like wandering around scenic places, then you might find Portofino seductive. The peninsula where Portofino sits is mostly a nature park. Beautiful homes dot the hills and hiking trails lead to quiet coves. San Fruttuoso is inaccessible except by boat or on foot and is the location for a abbey where monks first arrived in the 8th century. Brown castle is the present name of a 16th century fortress that was built to protect the village. It got its name from the English family that bought the ruin and renovated it. The larger coastal towns of Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo and Sestri Levante are also popular among visitors to the area.

Farther away is the wonderful historic center of Genoa to the west and the five lovely coastal towns of the Cinque Terre to the southeast

Please note: The area around Portofino can have rough waters, especially in late summer and fall. For this reason, ships scheduled to anchor at Portofino are often diverted to Genoa. This might be slightly inconvenient for those who were planning to spend the day in Portofino and San Fruttuoso, but for other areas docking in Genoa is just as convenient.

Portofino is a small fishing village in a narrow cove at the end of a peninsula. There is one narrow cliff road into the town which comes from Santa Margherita Ligure. The town has a population of less than 500, many of whom are wealthy, since the real estate is some of the most valuable in Italy.

How Far?

Taxis in Italy are very expensive as you can see by the Airport rate below.  If you are trying to get to Santa Margherita Ligure, a taxi may be a good option, but beyond that you would be better off seeing what you can arrange with your ship.  If you want to do things on your own, there is a train which is fairly inexpensive into Genoa or down to Sestri Levante.
