Palamos is the only commercial port on the Costa Brava in northeastern Catalonia. It is a small walkable city with excellent shopping and a nice promenade with cafes and bars along the water. The most popular attraction in town besides the shopping is the Fishing Museum. Across the bay from Palamos is Sant Antoni de Calonge with its hilltop medieval village. A short distance in the other direction is the beach at La Fosca in a protected bay with the ruins of a small fortress. The largest resort town in the immediate vicinity is Platja d'Aro, which is part of the town of Castell-Platja d'Aro. Heading to the north toward France are four sites that the great Catalan artist Salvador Dali has left behind - two homes, a museum and a theater. To the south the town of Sant Feliu de Guixols is famous for its architecture and the impressive Romanesque Monastery. The hillside city of Girona is the largest in this part of Catalonia and a popular tourist destination. And there is Barcelona only 90 minutes to the south.
