Palermo (Sicily), Italy Shops | What to Buy

Recommended Purchases: The most iconic Sicilian handicrafts are the marionettes or puppets used in the Sicilian Opra which was developed in the 19th century to dramatize the conflict between the Christian knights and the Arabs. Colorful and inexpensive ceramic items are also very popular and like with other parts of the Mediterranean often portray the local food items (like lemons) or use abstract designs unfluenced by Muslim culture. A very fun item to bring home is marzipan in a wide variety of shapes and colors. Sicily has a strong artisanal culture so every city has local craftsman creating wooden models of boats, carts and other items that are unique and beautiful.
