Key Attractions: Palermo Cathedral, Martorana, Palantine Chapel, Monreale Cathedral, Marionette Museum, Capuchin Catacombs, Botanical Garden, San Vito Lo Capo, Mondello, Erice, Bagheria, Cefalu, Segesta and Selinunte

Originally settled by the Phoenicians, Palermo was later home to Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Crusaders and Burgundians. All these peoples left their mark, creating a uniquely colorful city with elements from many cultures and traditions. Like so many cities in Sicily, Palermo is filled with historic and beautiful churches. Of particular interest are the fascinating Norman-Romanesque structures built in the 12th and 13th centuries, such as the Cathedral, the Palantine Chapel, the Matorana, and the Monreale Cathedral just outside the city. The mosaics in these churches are stunning. For those with other interests Palermo features Italy's largest botanical garden, a Puppet Museum with examples of Sicily's famous marionettes modeled as Crusaders and Moors, and the grotesque Capuchin Catacombs with hundreds of mummified corpses. The beach at Mondello is only a 20 minute drive. For Greek ruins, the temples at Segesta and Selinunte are among the world best regarded.
