Inside a deep cut bay along the southeastern coast of Corsica is the old port of Porto Vecchio, so named because it was the location of a Roman port. Little remains from that era, though there are megalithic ruins in several places outside the city. Otherwise, the main attraction of this small port is the cosmopolitan, pan-European crowd who gather around the yacht haven. Within the city there are several historic churches and small sections of the city walls from the Genoese era. But it is the squares, the lovely harbor, and sophisticated ambiance that draws most visitors. And most of the cruise lines that stop fit that mold as well. Within easy driving distance from Porto-Vecchio is the lovely mountain village of Zonza, providing easy access to the stunning ridge known as the Bavella Needles and of Levie, which is at the center of South Corsica's most important prehistoric sights. The larger town of Sartene, with its impressive wall, is a bit farther. The stunning port of Bonifacio, along the rugged southern coast of the island, is the area's most famous attraction. Some of Corsica's finest beaches are a very short distance from Porto-Vecchio.
