Windmill in Rhodes Harbor

Rhodes is a year-round Greek island destination just a few miles off the shore of southern Turkey. The city of Rhodes was the location of one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World, the Colossus of Rhodes, a massive statue that is said to have straddled the entrance to the harbor. Rhodes is an exciting and cosmopolitan city that shares its name with the mountainous island on which it was established. However, early in Rhodian history, the city of Lindos was the dominant town because of its easily defended Acropolis. Today, the most popular attractions are the old town in Rhodes (UNESCO World Heritage Site) with its medieval walls; Grand Master’s Palace and impressive Archaeological Museum; and the Lindos Acropolis, with dramatically-situated ruins from ancient and medieval periods. There is also an acropolis in Rhodes that offers great views of the city and a few interesting ruins. The island has many beaches for those who simply want to relax and a lovely interior filled with mountains, goats, olive groves and a Roman aqueduct here and there.
