RomeRome is known as "The Eternal City" because of its long importance in history, both political and spiritual. Beginning with the Roman Empire and through the Renaissance, Rome has been a center of art and culture. And as the location of the capital of Roman Catholicism, it is a place of spiritual pilgrimage for millions of believers from every part of the world. The primary cruise port for this inland city is Civitavecchia. Nearly all who debark at the port will go to Rome as there is so much to see. Even previous visitors will have new things to see or places they want to revisit. The most popular attraction in the city is certainly the Vatican, with its innumerable treasures of art and magnificent architecture. More ancient attractions include the Forum, the Colosseum, and the Pantheon. There are more than 900 churches in the city including four basilicas. A good portion of these houses of worship are worth visiting. But Rome is not just a historical museum. The city includes many squares and gathering places where watching locals and tourists is part of the fun. And there is an amazing night life in Rome, incredible restaurants, and shopping galore. Few places can compete with Rome when it comes to options for tourists. Among the area attractions outside Rome is Ostia Antica, a ruin at the old port of Rome that is similar to Pompeii and offers an unencumbered view of Roman life at the time of the caesars.

How Far?

Taxi fares in Rome start at 4,08 Euros with 1,15 added for each additional kilometer. (Numbeo.com - 11/13) Cruise lines charge about $40 per person for transfers into Rome which is a good value for two people. However, if you have 4 or more traveling together a taxi or a private transfer is more convenient and comfortable and will save you a little money. Taxis will not transport you from the cruise port to the Civitavecchia Train Station as the distance is too short.

Within Rome the most ecomonical way to travel is to the get the Biglietto giornaliero B.I.G (one day ticket) for 6 Euros or the three day ticket for 16,50 Euros. This ticket offers transportation on Rome's extensive Metro system with stops near many major attractions or on the many busses. If you are not carrying luggage this is fast and convenient.

The Roma Pass is a great option for those spending more than one day in Roman and wanting to see multiple historic sites. For 3 days metro and bus transportation, plus free admission to two museums and discounted admission after that. It is an excellent value. It costs only 34 Euros.
