On the northern side of the Sorrento Peninsula which forms the southern boundary of the Bay of Naples,   Sorrento has an excellent location for reaching Pompeii, Capri or Amalfi. It is at the beginning of the famous Amalfi drive. The small port's population is less than 20,000.

How Far?

Tenders from the ships to Marina Piccola take just a few minutes and there you will find buses and taxis.  The walk to the city center is steep but short.  There are free shuttles to Piazza Tasso, the transportation hub for the city.

Taxis in Italy are expensive so you are often better off booking excursions with your cruise line or pre-arranging tours with tour companies.  If you like to live as the locals do, then the local bus service is convenient and inexpensive.  It is not recommended that you rent a car!  The Amalfi road is incredibly scenic but also scary.  It would be a shame to miss it because of focusing on the traffic.
