Saint-Tropez gets its name from a early Christian beheaded by Nero. Legend has it that his head, along with a dog and a rooster, were put on a rotten raft which floated until it landed at the location of the town. Since the 1920s the resort town has attracted the truly stylish and trendy. First it was the fashionistas like Coco Chanel. In the 60s it was the wild and beautiful crowd including Bridgette Bardot. And more recently it has been rockers and rappers. But don't worry. You will mostly see quiet, well-heeled sophisticates who want a relaxing vacation like you do.

The main attractions in the town itself are the shops and cafes where you can enjoy the ease of luxury. There are two nice museums in town. The Butterfly Museum offers an impressive collection. The Annonciade Museum offers works by Matisse, Bonnard and other Post-impressionist masters. The Maures Massif (Range) is the backdrop for this part of the coast and hides many gems including the hilltop towns of Ramatuelle, Grimaud and Gassin and farther afield, the Verne Charterhouse (Monastery), the medieval village of Les Arc and the table-top mountain called Roquebrune Rock.

Geography and Population

Saint-Tropez is unique on the French Riviera in that its coastline is northfacing. It is located on the southern side of the long narrow Bay of Saint-Tropez opposite the town of Sainte-Maxime. The permanent population is less than 6000, but during summer months it is very popular with short and long term vacationers.
